That was it. I got a stress-induced depresion with panic attacks and anxiety so I quit studying and left Spain for Sweden and my family.

I do not want to take antidepressant medication - I'm handling it without medication and I am getting better.

It made me reevaluated my life, how short and fragile it is. For now I'm moving up to the village above the artic circle where my family comes from. I'll be working with a little bit of this and a little bit of that but one thing is sure - I don't feel like wasting more of my youth sitting still juggling with letters. I have been studying because I felt an obligation to do the most of what I have recieved in order to help others that have not been as lucky. i got a hell of a scare and I feel pretty sick of taking responsibility and doing things for others and for nature. I'm a bit more disillusioned I guess, suppose that is nescesary for me to start thinking of what I acctually like doing.

Reflexology and forestry interests me a lot....

Sabía que hace tiempo no he escrito nada pero no que fue hace TANTO tiempo...

Pues, no es por ser vaga eso les juro. De verdad puedo decir que estoy haciendo mi mejor esfuerzo con mis estudios. Todo dura tanto tiempo, leer y producir texto. Y ya no funciona mi ordenador. Que alegría

¡Haz algo divertido! Me dijo una compañera, pero si lo que yo quiero hacer son cosas que no puedo hacer aquí o cosas costosos. Todo es más caro aquí y a mi no me gusta gastar dinero. En mi blogg personal hice una lista con lo que yo quiero hacer, numero uno es ir a la sauna. (si si hay "saunas" aquí también, lo dejamos así).

El pensamiento del día es: ok es mal que no aprendemos metodología y eso de como hacer una investigación científica desde niños. Pero me parece mal que tampoco no enseñan como manejar estrés mental. Seguramente hay muchas personas inteligentes que tienen mucho que dar al mundo no siguen con sus estudios porque no saben cómo manejar el estrés o cómo encontrar un balance entre cosas creativas y cosas académicas. En suecia yo se cómo mantener el balance pero aquí...en un ciudad grande....humo, ruido con tan poca humanidad. No es fácil, ¿ey?
Yo creo que necesitamos más diferentes tipos de personas haciendo estudios científicos, estudios académicos o como se dice pero porque no aguantan el ambiente y la manera de enseñar las cosas los "perdemos" a cosas más interactivos. A mí por ejemplo me encanta cortar leña, cultivar, coser, cuidar los bosques de mí padre, artesanía, cantar etc. Eso no significa que no me interesa la filosofía, la economía, la psicología etc. pero estar sentada escuchando a académicos "secos" en un ambiente tan muerto y anti-creativo....

Pues lo que quiero decir es que hoy en días talvez menos que antes pero todavía hay muy poca diversidad entre los personas haciendo investigación científico y no es bueno. La sociedad pierde mucho talento y la verdad que la ciencia nos puede dar es menos completa. Necesitamos más diversidad en la universidad!!!!

A ver si mis pensamientos se dejan explicar con palabras en una manera que entendible.

Escribiendo nuestro trabajo sobre H&M y la Cooperación Corporativa Mondragón me puse a pensar en que son los preferencias de los consumidores que decide qué se vende en el mercado. Si una empresa pierde clientes a otro que vende cosas muy parecidas pero más baratas pues entonces la empresa va a tratar de poder vender sus productos más baratos también. Esto es aumentar la productividad y es bueno en que la empresa se pone a trabajar en una manera más eficaz, contempla sobre si hay gastos no necesarios y si pueden inventar nuevas formas de trabajar. PERO, el problema es que también significa que exigen lo más posible de la naturaleza y a los trabajadores. En países con libertad sindical, sueldo mínimo digno y reglas y leyes humanos eso no es tan problemático pero en países donde esto no hay pues puede ser MUY problemático.

Entonces como yo he dicho desde hace años – los consumidores tienen que tomar responsabilidad por cómo lo que consuman afecta al mundo alrededor. Tenemos que cambiar el significado de la palabra calidad. Cualidad no es solo que algo dura mucho tiempo y no se daña sino calidad debe también incluir evaluación de cómo el producto ha sido producido, con respeto a la naturaleza y los seres humanos productores.

Y aquí viene un pensamiento nuevo (para mí por lo menos) que lo que falta es información. Lo explico, si yo vivo en un pueblo yo puedo saber cuál agricultor trata mejor a sus animales, sus trabajadores y la naturaleza por que yo puedo ir a ver con ojos propios y hablar con mis vecinos antes de decidir adonde ir para hacer mis compras. En un mundo cerrado y pequeño yo puedo ver cómo mis acciones afecta a otros y al medio ambiente. Pero en el mundo de hoy la mayoría no tiene idea de cómo o dónde se produce los productos que consuman. Eso es falto de información. El consumidor tiene que poder fácilmente encontrar información sobre el la producción no solo de la empresa pero de otras personas involucradas. Entonces tenemos una desventaja de la globalización que tenemos que combatir con una ventaja. Pues tenemos el Internet para informarnos – tenemos que aprender cómo y porqué. Y entonces tenemos el desafío de llevar la tecnología a las personas pobres, sin educación y eso…

Estamos ahogando en toda la información aquí, muchos sin saber cómo escoger.

Iba a dedicar una hora a escribir algo aquí pero me quedé hablando con una chica de Gotenburgo y en 20 minutos empieza mi última clase de la semana.

Pues, lo que quería comunicar esta semana es que leyendo sobre la empresa sueca H&M y como dura menos de tres semanas para un diseño hacer el "viaje" de la mesa del diseñador a las tiendas. Eso de que una empresa hoy en día tiene que ser muy eficaz, rápido y eso para ser próspero me da pánico! La idea me da pánico. Pero no se por qué. Es un sentimiento, no tengo razones a por qué eso es mal. Claro hay mucha gente que tiene problemas con el estrés psicológico hoy en día pero no es por eso que al idea me da pánico. Yo no se si estar en contra algo solo por un sentimiento. Las ventajas son varias, no tienen que tener mercancía guardada sino directamente a las tiendas, muy rápido pueden saber si algo vende y si no cambiar el estilo para no producir ropa que la gente no quieren comprar. Lo malo es como las personas reaccionan a esta cultura de hacer cosas rápidamente. Solo porque la moda cambia yo no tengo que comprar nueva ropa. ¡No hay razón! Solo por que me ofrecen crédito yo no tengo que aceptarlo (puedo seguir ahorrando). Yo no tengo que trabajar para alguien que me pone "deadlines" que yo no puedo manejar.

Intelectualmente puedo decir que no me gustan ciertas cosas porque veo que afecta mal a otras personas y que la rueda está poniéndonos a correr más y más rápido. Pero emocionalmente no tiene porqué afectar a mí porque nadie me esta obligando a correr en la rueda. Yo veo que somos unos tontos muchas veces. La gente crea nuevas “necesidades” todo el tiempo. Se quedan con deudas por comprar cosas que nadie les obligaba a comprar. Se dejan llevar en el “frenzy” general y luego se quejan y algunos hasta dicen que es culpa de alguien otro – ¿pero por qué? les pregunto

Can the wealthiest man on earth also be the nicest? Bill Gates is systematically giving potions of his astronomical wealth, which is greater than the GNP of many countries in the world, away to different projects to fight diphtheria, tetanus, measles, TBC, polio, whooping cough, malaria and HIV and the likes. He even demands of the scientists that receive his money for research that they share their results with others instead of competing with them.

So now 'everyone' loves the geeky billionaire from Seattle that we not so long ago depicted as a greedy capitalist that made an insane amount of money making us dependent on his ill functioning software. Capitalism shows a nice face as opposed to the old face of ordinary greediness and ruthlessness - and Gates is all of a sudden an exemplary citizen.

So, what’s up? Did his bad conscious catch up with him or did he realize that he wouldn’t be able to spend it all? Or is it just an investment in a merchandize that is so expensive that it's not even available on the market. With a gigantic donation one can acquire what's not for sale - the possibility to rewrite ones own history. Anyone in doubt can compare what is written about the philanthropic ‘Saint’ Bill and what was written about greedy Gates, lord of the dark, a couple of years ago. What more, as a bonus he's making himself immortal.

The person that becomes the richest man on earth turning people in to slaves under the rule of windows is just another imperia-builder and will soon be forgotten. But the person that gives more than anyone else fighting disease and improving world health will be remembered forever, side by side with Rockefeller and Nobel.

So whatever the purpose: Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has once more made a really good investment.

My comment:

First of all I don’t know much about in what way Gates acquired his fortune - and I’m not out to judging him or anyone else. BUT, in general it seems to me that people use the system to their advantage and then when they have power/wealth they give away what they don’t need constructing a ‘nice guy’ image of themselves. Sure it’s better than staying poor, complaining about it and not trying to do anything to change the situation OR getting filthy rich and use the money to build an army and sponsor child prostitution. BUT neither would I want to say that if you can get rich without breaking the law in your country you’re automatically mister nice guy. You can still have gotten to where you are by using peoples weaknesses, which is the case in areas like prostitution, betting, alcohol, tobacco, drugs – or anywhere where you abuse you power over people and their needs to obtain what you want. It’s like if I would make someone trip and hurt themselves by spreading pebbles on the boardwalk and them come to their ‘rescue’ helping the person up and caring for its wounds. That would not make me mister nice guy now would it!

What I’m getting at is that I’m so sick of seeing people taking with one hand and giving with the other, destroying with one hand and building with the other. And in a lot of cases the first is doing more work than the other. On a small scale – people flying hither and dither across the world, consuming and consuming whatever and then scolding their, or other peoples kids, for throwing a piece of paper on the ground. On a big scale – the five permanent members of the UN Security counsel, France, Russia, China, the UK and the US, being responsible for 88% of the export of conventional weapons in the world (La Farola September 2006). I don’t want to be the pessimist here but we have to try and see things in a wider perspective, the sum of our actions. Of course we should always encourage good initiatives and intentions but not stop at that. How come that when you learn a new word it tend to pop up wherever you look? I learnt about "flexicurity" today in class, Derecho Internacional del Trabajo, and now when I was reading DN, one of Sweden's two biggest daily newspapers, the first article I read was on how our new Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfelt is in Lahti for the ongoing EU Heads of State or Government meeting. And what is the theme for the meeting? Well flexicurity of course! How Europe is going to be able to handle the globalization and the tougher competition, combining more flexible labour market and continuously strong social security. It is a challenge and of outmost importance since we citizens do not want to give up any of our rights and security no matter how costly they are. In that case it is really in our personal interest that the standard on minimum wages, workers rights and the likes is raised around the world - we can not compete with production in countries where the workers are totally exploited, working 14h/day without any social security. So...hang on...if their wages and working conditions go up the prices of the goods and services we buy get more expensive...oh, so globalization, international competition, the opening up of markets, kind of forces us to raise their wages and working conditions otherwise we won't be able to compete with them it terms of production costs! So do we have to choose btw keeping our wages and social security + higher prices on imported goods OR lowering our wages and social security more to 'their' level but keeping the low prices. I'm sure what the EU Heads of State or Government were discussing was how to get both - that seems to be the way homo sapiens work (is it greediness or smart resource maximising...)

Oh that's all for today...I'm beat...and hungry...and it takes me 1.5h to get "home" to Paracuellos.

Ok, another week of classes, I’m slowly getting the hang of how things work around here. By the way - I just wrote my first entry in the Spanish version o Wikipedia, on meänkieli. Which is the dialect of Finish that is spoken in the region of Tornedalen in the north of Sweden where I come from. Well, whether or not Meänkieli is a dialect or a language of its own is disputable, as well is whether I’m from Tornedalen or not but Meänkilei is acknowledge as one of Sweden’s five minority languages and I was born in Tornedalen. I was never taught Meänkieli though but plan to learn it, I try to pick up a few words every summer when I’m up there.

In class yesterday we got into the discussion on what to do about the poverty in the world. Interesting class, quite a few got a bit irritated by our teachers attitude on personal responsibility. It is hard to argue that we are all responsible for our lives and must be the ones that improve our situation since we’re born into so different societies and find ourselves in conditions that differ greatly from those of other people. But the truth is that responsibility and help to take that responsibility is what makes people develop and build strength and self-esteem. That is not to say that we can blame people for the situation they are in all the time – that is another story. The more I learn about the world the less I consider subsidies and the like as something good. We have to give people a chance to take care of themselves, give them the tools to use the possibilities they have and not turn them into passive help-receiving victims.
